Abstract

Formalin is often misused as a food preservative. This is clearly detrimental to society because even though
it is used a little, in the long term it can be bad for health. A variety of formaldehyde residue test kit products
are offered in the market to make it easier for government, academics and the public to detect the
formaldehyde content in food and beverages qualitatively. For this reason, a formalin residue test kit
product is needed which can test the presence of formaldehyde in food quickly & accurately. This study aims
to compare the detection limits of formaldehyde residues in food using the Antilin reagent and the Labstest
formalin Rapid Test Kit. The method used in this study was to test the limit of formaldehyde detection in
standard solutions with variations in the concentration of 0.01; 0.1; 1; 100 and 1000 mg / L and on food
samples previously immersed in a standard formalin solution with a certain concentration using Antilin
reagent and Formalin Rapid Test Kit. The test results are said to be positive if there is a change in purple
color both in the test solution detected by the Antillin reagent or the Formalin Rapid Test Kit. Based on the
intensity of the color change in the test results, it can be concluded that the Antilin reagent can detect
formalin in standard formalin solution with a concentration of 2 mg/L, lower than the formalin Rapid Test
Kit which can detect at a concentration of 10 mg/L. Whereas in food samples, both the Antillin reagent and
the Formalin Rapid Test Kit had the same formalin detection limit of 10 mg/L.
