Formulation and Characterisation Testing of Blush Cream with Secang Wood Extract (Caesalpinia sappan L.) as a Natural Colorant

Cream blush on is a cheek cosmetic that provides color while offering additional skin benefits. This study aimed to formulate cream blush on containing secang wood (Caesalpinia sappan L.) extract, which contains flavonoids and brazilein as natural antioxidants and colorants, at concentrations of 0%, 2%, 5%, and 8%. The extract was obtained by maceration using 96% ethanol. The formulations were evaluated for organoleptic properties, homogeneity, pH, viscosity, spreadability, smearability, cream type, and hedonic acceptance. All formulations were homogeneous, had pH values within the safe skin range (6.59–7.15), were classified as water-in-oil (W/O) type creams, and met viscosity and spreadability requirements. The extract concentration significantly affected pH (p<0.001), spreadability (p=0.041), and hedonic preferences (color and texture; p<0.05), but had no significant effect on viscosity (p=0.238) or aroma (p=0.961). The 8% extract concentration provided optimal smearability and a deep red color preferred by panelists. In conclusion, secang wood extract can be utilized as a natural colorant in cream blush on formulations, with the 8% concentration producing the best physical characteristics and panelist acceptance.
